i didn't want to do a one-person show at this time in my life, and b, i didn't go looking for a subject. this subject found me. it was really a case of being very inspired in the months after her death. a sense of loss for myself personally. she meant more to me than i ever imagined. she had a place in my heavens. i counted on her being there. then i realized i was sad for the country, and i was really compelled to pursue an understanding of her persona. why people adored her so. >> what did you learn about her? >> well, have you got about four years? we could talk about it. i researched her very heavily and i still am researching her.

i would say i've become good friends with her good friends and a lot of the people around her. i found a very complicated person, and aren't we all, really? if anybody takes a close look, she was often thin-skinned and sensitive. at the same time she could be just crack that whip over the people who worked for her. but as they told me stories of the hard work they did for her there were frequently tears had her eyes. they loved her so and she was working harder than they were. it still brings tears to their eyes. >> how did you prepare? you were inspired by her. you met her once, right? >> i met her once, but that has nothing to do with this. that as a happenstance meeting which i was very intimidated.

it seemsing to back, but it's always rolling. i have a speech of hers -- not a speech but a recorded conversation, several of them between her and her sweech did the writer, jam sessions. the speechwriter is very blue about the leadership and whining, and ann says, quit na whining. she said we're going to have a leader that comes, and suzanne, that says do you think? ann says, yeah, i do. and suzanne says, who do we have? >> ann says a couple of guys. mark warner is good. this is '04. she said mark warner is good. obama is capable of it. ann richards. give us another line that's classic ann richards. >> it's not from the play, but i was struck by it when i heard her say in the film about her presences, her one on one politicians and campaigning. she says i feed off of people. people give me energy. i just suck everything out of an audience and friends. i literally absorb them into my being. in the physical absence, i feel kind of let down and sort of rung out, but whether i'm with people, i feel energized and excited and ready to take on anything. so she really had a delightful manner, but spoken many, many different ways. >> you know, i spent my white house years covering george w. bush, president bush. there is something about that texas accent and feearn na. >> it's appealing. >> it's appealing and
